Rita Dove
Hyphenated Poet
printer friendly version
Inevitably, in this country, when someone regards you as a
hyphenated poet-- as an African-American-woman poet, or
a Latin-American-gay poet... then for some reason your peers
and the critics start making allowances, the rigor drops; it's
this condescension which is so insulting, because as a
serious writer one approaches the art with all the rigor of
non-hyphenated poets.

(Quoted in the Writer's Chronicle.)
