What the Cat Perhaps Sees
printer friendly version
If the wild jaguar
Can hunt in
The dark,
Then what may
Its cousin, the tame
House-cat see
In his
Nightly prowl around
The silent, sleeping house
Peering out the window
Like a portal
Into fantasy?
Is the black, starry
Blanket of night,
Perhaps,
Spiders spinning silk strands,
Owls dive-
Bombing unwary
Mice, and caterpillars
Scurrying to and fro
Under the thin, silver
Crescent moon?
Perhaps the cat,
Staring out the window,
Can see Mars, red
And fiery, or
Venus,
Golden and
Orange, a perfect orb of
Swirling clouds.
What would it be
Like, seeing
Past the barrier of
Our nearsightedness,
Past the dark
Dark void of
Night we see?
We saw nothing
Of the birth of the Luna moth,
Saw nothing but the illusion
Created in dream
When the cocoon
Finally split, when the moth
First flapped its wings
And soared across
The starry expanse
Of the night sky
a huge, graceful moth,
A caterpillar no longer.
