Nadine Gordimer
Education in South Africa
printer friendly version
To read that seven or eight times as much money is spent on the
education of a white child is upsetting, but then one goes on to
read about oil production of something else. But if someone writes
a story about the life of a black child and a white child, you'll
understand the implications, the ramifications of those issues
in a way the bare facts will never do.

(Quoted in Michiko Kakutani's "The Poet at the Piano: Portraits of
Writers, Filmmakers, Playwrights, and Other Artists at Work.")
